"Send us a text about this episode!"
In Nairobi, Kenya, Rephar Salamba is mother to her 16-year-old son. After leaving an abusive marriage, she rebuilt her life through determination and quiet strength, discovering a passion for handmade jewelry and becoming a community advocate and mentor to women working toward independence in Nairobi's Korogocho slums.
In this episode, Cindy Thompson sits down with Rephar Salamba, who candidly shares one of the lowest and most desperate periods of her life - and how she found her way from despair toward hope and transformation. Since then, Rephar has discovered new strength as a mother and found purpose as a social advocate, using her own experience to support other women rebuilding their lives.
Her creativity is part of that healing: with a passion for crafting jewelry from scrap and reclaimed materials, each intricate piece she designs is a quiet metaphor for the growth she has found within herself. Rephar now works with individuals and groups across Kenya - including the "Smart Mothers" of Korogocho slum - teaching women affected by poverty, HIV/AIDS and single parenthood the life and business skills they need to build lives of independence and purpose.
